Leadership Team
Howard C. Reiche Community School is pleased to be the first school in Maine that is led by a team of teachers. Reiche's Leadership Team (LT) consists of our 3 Lead Teachers, the chairs of the 4 committees, and a Reiche Portland Education Association (PEA) representative.
The Lead Teachers work half-time teaching students, and half-time addressing administrative responsibilities. One of the lead teachers is always on duty to cover the office, attend to parent concerns, participate in district meetings and handle other administrative tasks.

David Briley - Lead Teacher
Dave Briley joined the lead teacher team at Reiche Elementary School in 2024. Dave has always been proud to be a part of the Reiche community, where he has served during his 14 years with the Portland Public Schools. During his time at Reiche, he has embodied the school tagline, “Teacher-Powered, Student-Centered” by putting his students’ success at the heart of every decision. He is passionate about teacher leadership, often speaking at national conferences about growing teacher leaders and Reiche's teacher-powered journey. He has served as the enrichment chair on Reiche’s Leadership Team for six years. He is also a champion of equity, having served on district-wide equity leadership cohorts, and founding Reiche’s first Student Civil Rights Team. Before his teaching career, he worked for many years at COSI, a world-class science center in Columbus, OH. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Life Science from Otterbein University in Westerville, OH, and his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Southern Maine. He lives in South Portland with his wife (who is also a teacher) and two kids.

Taryn Southard - Lead Teacher
With 18 years of experience in education, and 10 of those years proudly serving in the Portland Public Schools, Taryn became a lead teacher at Reiche Elementary School in the summer of 2025. Her focus is on building on the strong relationships she developed at Reiche while working there as an instructional coach the previous school year.
Prior to joining Reiche, Taryn was a second-grade teacher and instructional coach at Talbot Community School, and before that worked with infants through fifth grade at a school in Virginia.
Taryn graduated from The George Washington University with a bachelor's degree in international affairs, and the University of Southern Maine with a master's degree in teaching and learning. Taryn is certified as a teacher of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and is currently part of the Leaders for Tomorrow's Schools cohort at the University of Southern Maine, working toward her assistant principal certification. Taryn also has served on the Elementary Advisory Team, and as a building representative and the vice president of the Portland Education Association.
Taryn and her family are avid Hearts of Pine and Liverpool soccer fans and they enjoy spending the summer at her family camp on Sebago Lake.
